Opening Two Minutes Analysis
'The Dark Knight' opens up with a shot of a big mordern city, implying something big is about to happen due to it being a busy, crowded and rich city. The music is upbeat and has a sense of tension in it however, there is no diegetic sound as it it will take the main focus away. This immeditely draws the audience in as they know this film is going to be full of action and crime.
As the camera shot moves closer to a tall glass building the window smashes open from a gun shot. The group of men wearing masks are shown, the identity is never revealed which will also keep the audience on the edge of their seat. The masks may represent villains. These characters are constantly carrying oversized weapons and big bags. From this you can tell a crime is about to take place, which it does immediately and it is a robbery. The movements of the characters are very subtle until the robbery where everything starts to speed up drawing the audience in more.
The characters begin to talk about the Joker, this keeps the audience questioning.Who is the joker? and when will he be revealed? However, the protangastic is not revealed in the beginning
which keeps the audience asking when will the hero and the villain be shown? What will happen next? This is effective as it makes the audience want to watch more to find out.
From this you can already see that conventions are being followed and it is very successful. There is the setting which is Gotham City, explosions, and crime just in the first two minutes. They have revealed enough to show it is an actionan film but havent gave away too much as the audience has sio much moreto find out. This is extremely clever as they are constantly keeping the audience in suspense.
