Opening scene

Iron man opening scene analysis

During the opening scene of Iron Man the audience are faced with the opening extreme long shot, a view of a desert and complete silence, with only the diegetic sound of the wind. In the distance three trucks are driving along the road and straight away we are given enigma's as to why the scene is set here.

The next shot displayed is a long shot of the trucks driving towards the camera with a background music which is very manly and can be seen as a convention of an action film. As the scene goes on we discover that the trucks are army trucks and the audience can question whether they are completing a mission, as at the top of the truck is a soldier, handling with a gun and on the look out for any of the opposition. The range of shots of the trucks make the audience excited and they are immediately drawn in as the scene looks dangerous, but still questioning why they are here.

The next shot is inside one of the trucks, and we get a glimpse of some of the soldiers inside the car. The audience are shown a close up of a glass of alcohol being held by someone, which is unusual as it doesn't fit with the rest of the scene, and in the background, coming into focus, we are shown a medium shot of a soldier who also looks as confused as the audience as to why the character is drinking alcohol, but he can also be seen as intimidated by the character, who we have not yet been introduced to. Straight away the next close up is of the protagonist, Tony Stark, wearing very formal clothes which makes him stand out from the rest, the glass of alcohol can connote that he has a lot of power as he is doing things that you usually wouldn't think a person would be able to do during the conditions of the scene.

The protagonist talks with a lot of dry humour which helps the audience connect with him allowing the character to become more personal to the audience instead of referring him to just the protagonist, even though we are not given him name. Just as we get used to the humour in the scene, a soldier asks to
take a picture with the main character, connoting he is a celebrity.

Just as the picture is about to be taken, the audience are shocked with a sudden explosion of the truck in front, which they see through an over the shoulder shot of the soldier in the front seat. The sudden explosion creates another enigma as to who is attacking them and why. The characters start shouting and we hear loud gun noises in the background which keep the audience in their seats waiting to see what happens next. One by one the soldiers are killed leaving only the protagonist to fend for himself.

The camera becomes out of control, which helps the audience to feel how chaotic the situation is, the camera does not stay still on the protagonist, which can connote that he doesn't know how to react and doesn't know whats going on. The audience watch as the protagonist runs and panics, trying to find a point of safety. While trying to call for help, we are shown a range of close up angles of the main character and the repeating gun shots keep the audience of the edge of their seats.

Suddenly a bomb falls right next to the main character and shows an extreme close up of the maker of the weapon called 'Stark Industries' and before he can get away he is hit with the bomb and the ending shot is a close up of him lying on the floor bleeding and unable to move. The picture blurs as well as the sound suggesting that he is dying or becoming unconscious.

The opening scene is very intense and exciting which can be compared to the convention of an action film, faced with a lot of enigmas, audience will be wanting to keep watching to find out what happens throughout the film.

Opening Two Minutes Analysis

Opening Two Minutes Analysis

'The Dark Knight' opens up with a shot of a big mordern city, implying something big is about to happen due to it being a busy, crowded and rich city. The music is upbeat and has a sense of tension in it however, there is no diegetic sound as it it will take the main focus away. This immeditely draws the audience in as they know this film is going to be full of action and crime.
As the camera shot moves closer to a tall glass building the window smashes open from a gun shot. The group of men wearing masks are shown, the identity is never revealed which will also keep the audience on the edge of their seat. The masks may represent villains. These characters are constantly carrying oversized weapons and big bags. From this you can tell a crime is about to take place, which it does immediately and it is a robbery. The movements of the characters are very subtle until the robbery where everything starts to speed up drawing the audience in more.
The characters begin to talk about the Joker, this keeps the audience questioning.Who is the joker? and when will he be revealed? However, the protangastic is not revealed in the beginning
which keeps the audience asking when will the hero and the villain be shown? What will happen next? This is effective as it makes the audience want to watch more to find out.

From this you can already see that conventions are being followed and it is very successful. There is the setting which is Gotham City, explosions, and crime just in the first two minutes. They have revealed enough to show it is an actionan film but havent gave away too much as the audience has sio much moreto find out. This is extremely clever as they are constantly keeping the audience in suspense.

Favourite genre

Horror

Personally, my favourite genre are horror films as I find them exhilarating and exciting. I like the intensity that the film builds up and the way you feel towards a moment that you know is going to happen but still makes you jump. They keep you on the edge of your seat with constant frightening moments and scarring faces. They create a sense of fear and panic which in some way is satisfying.

I like a horror movie to have a storyline so there is a point to the film, for example 'The Conjuring'. This is my favourite film as it is full of tense moments and keeps your heart racing throughout. The Conjuring is about a family living in a haunted house, a doll is the main focus of the scare. Dolls are represesnted to be frightening in films and it is shown at the beggining making the audience aware of the terror it might bring.

Favourite Director

Nick Cassavetes

Actor and director Nick Cassavetes who is known for 'The Notebook' directs my favourite film, 'My Sisters Keeper'. He is extremly passionate when it comes to directing and has a natural talent for it. He likes to call films he directs 'the weepers' as he makes many similiar projects which mostly have an extremely upsetting storyline. This is his kind of style when it comes to directing films amnd I find he is very successful with it, which makes him my favourite director from my own persoanl likings. I am a person who enjoys weeping over films and feeling saddened by them as you get so attacthed to the character and feel all their emotions. I find these type of films dramatic and contain many heartrending moments.

He has many achievements from just appearing in films such as 'Face off' to directing films such as 'The Notebook' and 'Shes So Lovely'  leading him to direct 3 different actors in oscar-nominated performances: Seymour Cassel, Lynn Carlin and Gena Rowlands. Finally he wrote the dialogue for the Justin Timberlake music video "What Goes Around... Comes Around." This shows he can direct a range of videos and not just films, proving he is different to other directors.
